Douglas MacRae is a Toronto based painter, photographer, motorcycle racer and world traveller
He graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1989. Doug launched his career during his OCAD studies with his long time collaboration with HMV Records. He painted large scale photo-realistic murals of musicians including Annie Lennox, U2, and Celine Dion across their retail stores globally. His wanderlust was ignited with HMV flying Doug to paint in-person murals in New Zealand, New York city and throughout North America. He also painted murals and album cover designs for various Canadian rock bands. ----
This evolved into award-winning national advertising campaigns with his super-realism illustration works and for editorial features such as Esquire magazine. Doug was also commissioned to do classical oil paintings including 20 foot Pre-Raphaelite style paintings for the Liberty Grand and (6) five to seven foot super realism paintings for an international travel company in London, UK. Doug has won awards for Marketing Magazine, CAPIC (Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators) and Lux. ---
He expanded his career in international travel photography and received commissioned work from various tourism boards, airlines and travel companies for campaigns in India, Peru, Kenya, Morocco, Italy, France and other iconic destinations. Large-scale installations of his travel photography grace various Toronto restaurants including the Spice Route, Cibo and the Rosewater Supper Club. ----
Doug raced motorcycles for 20 years, winning at Daytona, Mid-Ohio, Barber, Mosport and becoming a three time AMA Grand Vintage Racing Champion with his Norton race bike. His passion for racing evolved into photography with various editorial features in motorcycle magazines including the cover photo for Cycle World. Some of his images will be featured in TASCHEN’s upcoming Ultimate Collector Motorcycles coffee table book. ----
In 2019, Doug was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM), an incurable stage four brain cancer and was given a 12+ month survival prognosis. Less than 12% of GBM patients worldwide survive three years. After two brain surgeries, he has now survived 42 months. His positive mindset is: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
