This exhibition of new paintings represents a third phase in my recent exploration of landscape-based work. The images are of the places that I know most intimately, from my birthplace in Prince Edward County to our family farm in the Trent Hills. These are the same locations that inspired my large colour field paintings in the exhibition BURNT ORANGE NIGHT in 2018. Subsequently, I analyzed and emulated the small oil sketches of Tom Thomson in my POLYCHROME series from 2020.
COLOUR CHARTS is the natural outgrowth of my explorations thus far, trying to capture the resonance of the places that signify most for me through the vibrant paint handling that I learned from Tom Thomson.
Each small landscape has a corresponding colour chart derived from the painting’s palette. The colour chart functions as a reiteration of the imagery in different terms; an abstract painting based on the representational painting to which it is joined.
For me, the relationship between these distilled colours and the painted landscape is the true subject of these works.
